Synopsis

The BMC has taken strict action against two Living Liquidz outlets in Kamala Mills for carrying out unauthorised structural modifications and operating without required fire safety approvals. The civic body demolished illegal extensions and cancelled their licences. This comes after inspections revealed that commercial premises meant for a tailoring shop and a garment store had been illegally turned into bar and wine shop operations. The crackdown is part of a wider enforcement drive in the Kamala Mills compound targeting several eateries for violations.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) recently demolished unauthorised extensions and cancelled the licences of two Living Liquidz outlets operating from Kamala Mills Compound in Lower Parel. Civic officials confirmed that the action was taken after it was found that the businesses were running bar and wine shop operations in spaces originally permitted for a garment store and a tailoring shop.

During the inspection, BMC authorities discovered several violations. The outlets had constructed illegal partitions, converted areas into cold storage, made unauthorised changes to doors, and erected roofing structures that breached the approved floor space index. A stop-work notice was issued, and the structures were demolished the following day.

Officials from the health department, building and factory department, building proposals, and state excise department participated in the action. The drive was supervised by Additional Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Joshi.

The BMC said the licences were revoked because the establishments lacked mandatory fire safety certification and had failed to comply with regulatory requirements. The premises posed a risk to public safety, prompting immediate enforcement.

Prior to this, the BMC had acted against several other food outlets and restaurants within Kamala Mills. Eateries such as McDonald's, Theobroma, Starbucks, Bira Taproom, Shiv Sagar Hotel, Nano's Café, BKT House, and Food by Devika had constructed compound walls and enclosed open spaces, violating licence norms. Civic action included demolition of illegal structures at these venues as well.

BMC officials have indicated that similar inspections and actions will continue in Kamala Mills and surrounding commercial zones. The ongoing drive aims to curb illegal construction and ensure compliance with safety norms.
