Synopsis

Mumbai's civic body is planning to demolish the MTNL flyover in Goregaon to facilitate seamless connectivity between the upcoming Coastal Road (North) and the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR). The flyover, linking Mindspace to Dindoshi Court, stands in the path of the planned transition to GMLR tunnels. While officials say the move will improve east-west mobility, locals and politicians are divided-some worry about worsening traffic, especially towards Malad and Marve, while others criticise the demolition of a functional, decade-old structure as poor planning. The controversy echoes the earlier removal of Bandra's skywalk for Metro Line 2B.

Mumbai's civic body is planning a structural change in Goregaon as part of its effort to streamline connectivity between the Coastal Road (North) project and the proposed Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR). According to civic officials, a proposal for the demolition of the MTNL flyover at Goregaon is expected to be sent for approval to the municipal commissioner soon.

The flyover is situated on the stretch connecting Mindspace to Dindoshi Court, a section that is part of the Coastal Road 2 project package. This particular corridor is strategically important as it is planned to link directly with the GMLR tunnels, offering motorists a smooth transition from Mumbai's western coastline to its eastern suburbs without entering congested arterial roads.

Municipal sources revealed that a former Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officer had flagged the conflict between the Savarkar Flyover and Coastal Road 2 nearly a year ago. However, a viable resolution plan is now finally being worked out.

The news has produced mixed responses from locals and politicians. Some argue that the MTNL flyover currently aids in reducing peak hour traffic congestion. Demolition of this flyover might worsen the traffic situation, particularly for vehicles heading towards Malad, Madh and Marve. Others have highlighted the fact that the Flyover is relatively new; built less than 10 years ago, and diminishing of the same reflects poor planning and misuse of public funds.

This controversy mirrors the recent dismantling of a significant portion of the Bandra (West) skywalk, which took place between 2019 and 2024 to make room for Metro Line 2B connecting DN Nagar to Mandale. That project, too, drew criticism over the sudden scrapping of functional infrastructure.

The Coastal Road (North), formally known as the Versova-Dahisar Link Road (VDLR), is a 22-km corridor featuring a mix of road types on-ground roads, elevated sections, stilt structures, a cable-stayed bridge, and even a cut-and-cover tunnel beneath a creek. It is one of Mumbai's largest mobility projects, expected to significantly ease cross-city travel once complete.
