Synopsis

Ludhiana's one-time settlement scheme for property tax defaulters has been extended until mid-August, allowing payments of outstanding dues without penalty or interest. Initially launched in May, the scheme received a lukewarm response but saw a spike in participation closer to the original deadline. The extension follows increasing public footfall and growing collections, which have reached around INR 15 crore so far. The total property tax collection for the current fiscal has touched nearly INR 40 crore. Suvidha Kendras have been operating on weekends to handle the rising number of taxpayers.

The municipal authorities in Ludhiana have extended the deadline for the ongoing one-time property tax settlement scheme until mid-August. This scheme allows property owners with outstanding dues dating back to 2013-14 to pay only the principal amount, with a complete waiver on interest and penalty.

The original deadline of July-end saw a sharp rise in payments at municipal Suvidha Kendras, prompting the extension. Municipal officials confirmed that collections under the scheme have touched approximately INR 15 crore, contributing to a total of nearly INR 40 crore in property tax revenue for the ongoing fiscal year.

According to officials, if defaulters pay their dues during this extended period, they will continue to receive the full waiver on additional charges. After this window closes, only a 50% waiver on penalties and interest will apply, which will continue till the end of October.

MC Superintendent Vivek Verma described the scheme as a "golden chance" for those who were unable to pay on time earlier. He urged residents to make use of this relief window and avoid paying extra later.

Due to increased workload, municipal staff have been working even on weekends and holidays. Several employees are likely to request leave once the scheme ends, especially with Raksha Bandhan approaching.

In parallel, tax payments made for the current financial year are eligible for a 10% rebate, provided they are paid before the end of September. This has led the civic body to consider keeping Suvidha Kendras open for extended hours over the next two months as well.
