BBMP has imposed a fine of INR 1 lakh on a property owner in Basavanagudi for building a ramp that fully blocked the footpath, forcing pedestrians onto the road. The ramp was part of an under-construction building on MN Krishna Rao Road. Following an inspection, three BBMP officials from the Mahalakshmipuram sub-division were suspended for failing to act on earlier complaints related to the obstruction. This action comes as part of BBMP's ongoing efforts to prevent encroachment and ensure public pathways remain accessible and safe.
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) recently took strict action against a property owner in Basavanagudi for illegally building a ramp that extended over the footpath, completely blocking pedestrian movement. The ramp was part of a building under construction on MN Krishna Rao Road. It was concealed with green netting and left no space for people to walk, forcing them to use the road instead.
After receiving complaints, BBMP officials inspected the site and confirmed that the ramp had been built beyond the boundary of the private property. It was clearly encroaching on public space and posed a safety risk to pedestrians.
Acting on instructions from the BBMP Chief Commissioner to double fines for such violations, the Chief Engineer (South Zone) submitted a report following the inspection. A notice was then issued to the property owner, along with a fine of INR 1 lakh for the encroachment. The owner paid the fine by submitting a cheque to the BBMP Chief Commissioner.
Alongside the fine, BBMP also suspended three officials from the Mahalakshmipuram sub-division for failing to take timely action on earlier complaints about debris and the footpath obstruction. These officials were held responsible for negligence.
The civic body stressed that such misuse of public spaces will not be tolerated. Officials have been directed to take immediate and strict action against any future instances of footpath encroachment, including debris dumping or unauthorised construction.
