The Gurugram Metro project reached a notable stage earlier this week as bids were opened for the construction of phase one of the corridor connecting Millennium City Centre and Sector 9. Gurugram Metro Rail Limited confirmed that a joint bid submitted by Dilip Buildcon and RBL had emerged as the lowest financial offer. The corridor is part of a three-phase plan to enhance the city's urban transit infrastructure. The first phase consists of an elevated stretch spanning over fifteen kilometres, with fourteen metro stations planned between Millennium City Centre and Sector 9. A secondary branch of approximately two kilometres will link the system to the Dwarka Expressway. In addition, a ramp is planned to connect with a future depot site in Sector 33.
Tendering for the civil construction component took place a few months ago, attracting multiple bids. Of the eight submissions, six qualified through the technical evaluation process. Authorities are aiming to commence construction work by the latter part of September. The scheduled completion timeframe is around thirty months.
During a recent high-level meeting, a Union Minister reportedly stated that any delay or laxity in execution would be viewed seriously and promised periodic monitoring of the project's progress. Preparatory work, including shifting of utility lines and addressing land acquisition, will be prioritised before civil construction begins. However, challenges remain, particularly concerning the location of the Cyber City interchange station. This issue has delayed the planning of phase two, though a resolution is expected in the near future.
Phase one is set to strengthen intra-city movement, reduce traffic congestion, and support the city's rapid urban expansion. With construction expected to begin shortly and timelines in place, the project could significantly alter Gurugram's mobility landscape. Successful implementation of this phase will also set the foundation for future extensions, including the yet-to-be-finalised interchange with the regional rapid transit system.
