Synopsis

Mumbai's GT Hospital has received crucial approval to construct a new medical college building on its premises, marking a significant step after a decade-long wait. The Maharashtra government has sanctioned over INR 210 crore for the modern 20-storey facility, which will include classrooms, laboratories, hostels, and staff quarters. This development aims to demolish the hospital's old structure and address a long-standing space crunch, enhancing medical education and infrastructure in south Mumbai. The project, vital for boosting healthcare services, is expected to take two to three years for completion and follows the hospital's recent launch of its first MBBS batch.

Mumbai's Gokuldas Tejpal (GT) Hospital has received approval to construct a new medical college building on its premises, marking a significant step forward after a decade-long wait. The Maharashtra government recently sanctioned over INR 210 crore for this project, which includes the construction of the college block, hostels, and staff quarters.

The plan involves demolishing the hospital's old, dilapidated structure, which is a heritage building with restrictions on repairs, to make way for a modern 20-storey building. The new facility will span nearly 34,780.5 square meters, including dedicated space for the college building and separate boys' and girls' hostels.

The decision to establish a medical college affiliated with GT, Cama, and Albless hospitals was initially taken in January 2012. While the Indian Council of Medical Research gave its permission earlier, the hospital has faced a long struggle with space constraints. There have been ongoing discussions with the state government to move its adjacent 'chota mantralaya' (doctors' quarters) elsewhere and hand over that building to the hospital to allow for effective expansion as a tertiary care facility.

GT Hospital, which has 1,026 beds, began its first MBBS batch with 50 students just last year, in the 2024-25 academic year. It is currently awaiting approval from the National Medical Commission (NMC) to increase its student intake to 100, which the new college building is designed to accommodate. According to NMC guidelines, a hospital with at least 650 beds and 15,000 square meters of floor space is required to have a postgraduate medical college attached. The new facility will include all necessary provisions as per these guidelines, with lecture halls capable of holding 200 students if future expansion is required.

The construction of the new buildings is expected to take another two to three years. In the interim, officials stressed the need for the adjacent building to be handed back to the hospital to expand operations, as the current heritage structure limits renovation options. The Maharashtra Public Service Commission is also actively recruiting new professors for the college.
