Synopsis

Nagpur's Metro Phase 3 has received formal approval in a high-level meeting with CM Shri Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister Shri Nitin Gadkari. MahaMetro and RITES have prioritised the 11.5 km Sitabuldi-Koradi corridor, featuring Nagpur's first underground stretch and expected to serve 1.47 lakh daily riders by 2054. A second route, Mankapur Chowk-Rachana Junction, will begin with bus services and may shift to metro later. The city's CMP spans 3,780 sq km and includes outer ring roads, electric buses, parking, and freight terminals. A feeder bus from Kasturchand Park will connect to key offices in Civil Lines and Sadar to ease last-mile travel and encourage metro use.

A high-level stakeholder meeting featuring CM Shri Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister Shri Nitin Gadkari saw the CMP's Metro Phase 3 segment formally approved. MahaMetro, in collaboration with RITES, finalized the 11.5 km Sitabuldi-Koradi corridor as the top priority based on Peak Hour Peak Direction Traffic and expected ridership trends. Alongside, a 25 km Mankapur Chowk Rachana Junction route was also included under Phase I planning, though it will initially be served by articulated buses.

The Sitabuldi-Koradi route is slated to branch from Kasturchand Park and includes underground sections marking Nagpur's first such stretch. The corridor is projected to attract around 1.47 lakh riders daily by 2054, pointing to its strategic value for future urban demand. Details such as station count and precise alignment await finalization; a 15 day window is open for departments to submit inputs before DPR drafting begins, followed by tendering stages.

MahaMetro officials explained that the Mankapur-Rachana stretch, though included in Phase-I, will rely on bus transit to assess demand and later pivot to metro if viable. A proposed Metro Phase IV remains undeclared in terms of routes.

The CMP expands beyond metro lines. A broader plan covering 3,780 sq km and over 43 lakh residents includes three phases with total outlay of INR 25,567 crore. This includes a 148 km six-lane outer ring road, electric buses, bicycle sharing, intelligent traffic systems, off-street parking and freight terminals built to support both growth and congestion relief.

To bridge last-mile gaps, MahaMetro is introducing a feeder bus service from Kasturchand Park station to key government offices in Civil Lines and Sadar, targeting institutions like high court, GST offices, and chief minister's office. This aims to reduce reliance on personal vehicles and enhance Metro uptake for thousands of employees and visitors daily .

Nagpur Metro, now operated by MahaMetro, launched its Phase-I along the Orange and Aqua lines between 2019 and late 2022, covering nearly 38 km across 37 stations. Sitabuldi has served as the key interchange station since 2019-20. Earlier drafts of the city's CMP were formulated by the Nagpur Improvement Trust in 2013 and revised in 2018, with successive stakeholder rounds shaping the current version.
