The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has proposed four new metro corridors for Ghaziabad, aiming to significantly enhance regional connectivity, particularly with Noida. These extensions, totaling approximately 25 kilometers and estimated to cost INR 7,500 crore, include extending the Blue Line to Sahibabad and a Pink Line extension to Arthala, linking parts of Delhi to Hindon Civil Terminal. With the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs now funding the preparation of detailed project reports, these projects have a better chance of advancing. This development promises to improve public transport access for over 5 lakh residents and integrate key areas like Indirapuram, Vasundhara, and Vaishali, alongside providing air connectivity.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has put forward a Phase V expansion plan that includes four new metro corridors for Ghaziabad. These new lines are designed to greatly improve connectivity in the region, especially with Noida.
One key proposal is the extension of the Blue Line from Noida Electronic City to Sahibabad. This is expected to benefit over 5 lakh (500,000) residents in areas such as Indirapuram, Vasundhara, and Vaishali. This extension will also provide a link to the Namo Bharat corridor, which passes through Sahibabad.
Other proposed metro corridors in Ghaziabad include a 12-kilometer extension of the Pink Line from Gokulpuri to Arthala. This line will connect parts of north and east Delhi to Hindon Civil Terminal and will have a mix of underground and elevated sections with eight stations. Additionally, a 3-kilometer extension of the Red Line corridor is planned, stretching from Shaheed Sthal New Bus Adda to Ghaziabad railway station, which will include one new station. Another extension of the Blue Line corridor is proposed, linking Vaishali and Mohan Nagar. This line will be about 5 kilometers long and feature four stations.
The DMRC has asked the Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) to begin preparing detailed project reports (DPRs) for these corridors. The cost of these DPRs will be covered by the Centre. The total estimated construction cost for all four corridors, spanning 25 kilometers, is approximately INR 7,500 crore.
Funding has been a hurdle for some of these projects in the past. However, with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) now stepping in to finance the DPRs, these projects have a better chance of moving forward with support from both the central and state governments.
The extension to Hindon Civil Terminal is particularly important as it will offer air connectivity to residents from north and east Delhi, western Uttar Pradesh districts, and Noida, given the increasing flight operations from the terminal.
