Synopsis

Over 300 housing units built under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) in Lucknow's Basant Kunj scheme were allotted to eligible applicants during a lottery process that began last Thursday. This marks a significant step towards providing affordable housing in the city, with the draw continuing for various reserved categories over the weekend. The 1,000-unit project, for which applications were invited in 2021, aims to provide compact yet well-equipped homes at an accessible cost to urban poor families, aligning with the broader goal of 'Housing for All' in Uttar Pradesh and nationwide.

Over 300 housing units constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) in the Basant Kunj scheme of Lucknow were allotted to eligible applicants during a lottery process that began last Thursday.

The draw, which was held at Mercury Hall, Indira Gandhi Pratishthan, continued through Friday and Saturday, with each day set aside for different reserved categories of applicants. On the first day of the draw, 307 applicants were successfully allotted homes in Sector-I of the Basant Kunj scheme.

According to CP Tripathi, additional secretary of the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA), allotments for various categories, including Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, Divyangjan (persons with disabilities), and senior citizens, were completed during Thursday's draw.

The application process for these 1,000 housing units began in 2021. Of the 9,238 people who initially applied, 7,784 were found eligible after a thorough verification process. Each unit measures approximately 34 square meters in size and is housed within four-storey buildings. The cost per unit is set at INR 4.79 lakh, making these homes accessible for their target beneficiaries.

The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) (PMAY-U), launched in 2015, is a flagship initiative by the Government of India aimed at providing affordable housing for all eligible urban households. Under its latest phase, PMAY-U 2.0, which began on September 1, 2024, the scheme aims to ensure permanent (pucca) houses for all urban poor families.

Uttar Pradesh has recently secured financial approval of INR 12,031 crore under PMAY-U 2.0, further boosting its housing mission. The cost of these housing units is typically shared between the central and state governments in a 60:40 ratio, with each eligible beneficiary receiving financial assistance to help build or acquire a permanent house. Transparency and quality are emphasized, with geo-tagging and photographic documentation mandatory for monitoring construction at every stage, and houses designed with disaster-resilient features.
