Synopsis

Amazon has unveiled plans to significantly expand its infrastructure in India, citing expectations of increased festive demand supported by the GST rate cut. The company announced an investment of INR 2,000 crore in 2025 for nationwide network growth, including fulfilment centres, sortation hubs, and delivery stations. This expansion will increase storage capacity, strengthen last-mile delivery, and enhance customer experience, particularly in West Bengal where new facilities have been introduced.

Banking on sharp growth during the upcoming Great Indian Festival, Amazon stated earlier this week that it is expanding its infrastructure across India and anticipates the GST rate cut to further fuel festive demand. Company officials said the planned investment of INR 2,000 crore in 2025 would support a broad network expansion involving new fulfilment centres, sortation hubs, and delivery stations.

The expansion includes the launch of 12 additional fulfilment centres, adding 8.6 million cubic feet of storage space and taking Amazon's total storage capacity in India to 43 million cubic feet. Alongside this, six new sortation centres spanning 500,000 square feet are being introduced, while 30 new delivery stations have already been rolled out in recent months.

In West Bengal, a new fulfilment centre has been set up in Hooghly, raising the state's total count to four. The existing network in the state also comprises three sortation centres and around 100 delivery stations.

Arindam Ganguly, Director of Amazon Transportation Services, mentioned that as a result of these network enhancements, customers in Kolkata had witnessed a 170 per cent year-on-year increase in same-day delivery promises. He further added that without disclosing value terms, the company had seen pre-festive growth of 20 to 60 per cent across a wide range of products in the state.

With new fulfilment and sortation centres, coupled with a stronger delivery network, the company is positioning itself to meet customer expectations more effectively. The expansion in West Bengal further highlights its regional focus, ensuring faster services and a wider product reach for customers across India.
