The Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw inaugurated a lithium-ion battery manufacturing plant of Japanese firm TDK Corporation in Sohna, Haryana, with an initial investment of around INR 3,000 crore. The factory will produce about 20 crore battery packs annually for mobile phones, laptops, and wearable devices, meeting nearly 40% of India's yearly requirement of 50 crore cell packs. The facility, spread over approximately 180 acres, is expected to generate employment for over 5,000 people. Production will begin on a small scale later this year and gradually expand according to demand.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw inaugurated a lithium-ion battery manufacturing plant of Japanese firm TDK Corporation in Sohna, Haryana, marking a significant step in strengthening India's electronics manufacturing sector. He noted that the plant is part of the government's efforts to deepen the electronics value chain in the country.
Vaishnaw explained that the factory will manufacture lithium-ion batteries used in mobile phones and wearable devices such as watches, earbuds, AirPods, and laptops. Once fully operational, it is expected to produce around 20 crore battery packs every year. TDK Corporation, known for supplying batteries to Apple, major mobile phone brands, laptop manufacturers, and other wireless devices, will serve as the primary operator of the facility.
The minister highlighted that India's annual requirement in the mobile phone sector is roughly 50 crore battery packs, meaning this factory alone will meet about 40% of the country's demand. He also pointed out that the plant has significant potential for future expansion. Vaishnaw acknowledged the support from the Government of Haryana in facilitating the project and said it would provide employment opportunities for over 5,000 people.
Haryana Industries and Commerce Minister Rao Narbir Singh added that the factory spans approximately 180 acres and represents an investment of around INR 3,000 crore.
TDK Chief Executive Officer for Energy Solutions Business Company, Fumio Sashida, stated that production will begin on a small scale in the fourth quarter of this calendar year and will gradually scale up to produce 20 crore battery packs annually based on customer demand. Sashida also mentioned that the plant is open to all industry players looking to source lithium-ion batteries.
This plant represents a strategic move to enhance domestic manufacturing capabilities in critical electronic components and reduce reliance on imports, while also contributing to local employment and industrial growth in Haryana.
