The Coimbatore metro, a forty-kilometre project estimated at INR 10,740 crore, is in the final stage of preparing its Land Plan Schedule. CMRL has completed primary mapping and submitted it for approval, while secondary planning to identify properties and land requirements is underway. Asset valuation and verification will follow, expected to conclude within two months. An urgent plan for a 1.4 km stretch has revised road width to thirty metres, requiring private and government land. Technical surveys have been validated, and studies on a possible double-decker line on Avinashi Road are ongoing.
The Coimbatore metro project has moved closer to completion of its land planning stage, with Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) confirming that the final Land Plan Schedule (LPS) for both corridors will be completed within the next two months. The project is planned across nearly forty kilometres and is estimated to cost INR 10,740 crore.
To address traffic congestion in the city, an urgent plan has been prepared for a 1.4 km stretch between Tex Tools Bridge and Suriya Hospital. Officials explained that the road width here had been reduced over the years due to encroachments, and the revised plan now proposes a width of thirty metres instead of twenty. The land required for this section includes 2.28 acres of private land and 0.58 acres of government land.
Primary mapping work for the two corridors has already been completed and forwarded for administrative approval. The secondary stage, which involves identifying the number of properties to be acquired, the total land required, and asset classification, is now underway. Once this is finalised, field officers will begin valuation of the assets and verification of properties, which is expected to be finished in the coming two months.
The project has also made significant progress on the technical front. Subsurface utility mapping using Ground Penetrating Radar has been validated, while topographical surveys carried out using Mobile LiDAR and drones have also received approval from CMRL. These surveys are intended to ensure accuracy in planning and to reduce challenges during construction.
In addition to land and survey work, studies are being carried out to assess whether a double-decker structure can be constructed along Avinashi Road, covering the stretch between Goldwins and Neelambur. While a single-deck option is available, a double-decker design would require clearance from airport authorities before it can proceed. Officials are reviewing both options to determine the most suitable plan.
To strengthen coordination and monitoring, CMRL is also setting up a dedicated project office in Coimbatore's west zone. The office will serve as a central point for planning and execution activities.
