The National Highways Logistics Management Limited, operating under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, has entered into an agreement with the Uttarakhand tourism department to develop two ropeway projects aimed at enhancing connectivity to key pilgrimage destinations. Valued at INR 6,800 crore, the projects will link Sonprayag to Kedarnath and Govindghat to Hemkund Sahib. The initiative, witnessed by state and central leaders, is expected to strengthen tourism, generate employment, and promote environmental conservation while giving global recognition to Uttarakhand's cultural heritage.
The National Highways Logistics Management Limited, a special purpose vehicle functioning under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, signed an agreement with the Uttarakhand tourism department earlier this week for the development of two ropeway projects worth INR 6,800 crore.
The projects comprise a 12.9 km ropeway from Sonprayag to Kedarnath with an estimated cost of INR 4,100 crore, and a 12.4 km stretch from Govindghat to Hemkund Sahib estimated at INR 2,700 crore. Officials highlighted that these ventures are designed to boost tourism and contribute significantly to the state's economic growth.
The signing ceremony took place in the presence of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Ajay Tamta, and state tourism, religious affairs, and culture minister Satpal Maharaj.
Chief Minister Dhami remarked that the agreement would provide global recognition to the state's religious and cultural heritage, while also opening avenues for tourism, employment opportunities, and environmental protection. Union Minister Ajay Tamta stated that it marked an important step for ropeway development in Uttarakhand, noting that devotees would find it much easier to reach Kedarnath and Hemkund Sahib once the projects were completed. State minister Satpal Maharaj added that the agreement would serve as a key milestone in the development of tourism.
By easing travel for pilgrims and tourists, the ventures are expected to improve accessibility, generate jobs, and support local communities. With state and central authorities jointly driving the initiative, the projects are positioned to reinforce Uttarakhand's reputation as a hub of spiritual tourism while aligning with sustainable development goals.
