The Municipal Corporation of Delhi's (MCD) Suniyo property tax amnesty scheme has registered a remarkable rise in collections and taxpayer participation within three months of its launch. Generating INR 304 crore, the scheme has surpassed the figures achieved under the earlier Samriddhi initiative by more than three-and-a-half times. Authorities reported a sharp increase in the number of taxpayers, with over one lakh participants contributing, driven largely by improved awareness campaigns and smoother digital payment systems.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi announced that its Suniyo property tax amnesty scheme, introduced three months ago, has collected INR 304 crore, significantly exceeding the INR 84.23 crore raised under the earlier Samriddhi scheme in the same comparative period of 2022-23. Officials explained that this marked a rise of more than 63,000 taxpayers, representing a 163.22 per cent growth in participation.
During its first month in June, the scheme collected INR 96.28 crore, of which INR 35.30 crore came from residential taxpayers and INR 60.98 crore from commercial taxpayers. The figure rose to INR 150.57 crore in July, while August collections reached INR 58 crore.
Zone-wise data from the MCD dashboard revealed that Narela contributed the highest with INR 44.8 crore, followed by Karol Bagh at INR 28.69 crore, MCD headquarters at INR 25.78 crore, South zone at INR 24.78 crore, and City SP at INR 24.36 crore. Other major contributors included Keshavpuram, Shahdara (South), Shahdara (North), West, and Central zones, all crossing the INR 20 crore threshold.
Rohini brought in INR 16.27 crore, Civil Lines INR 13.68 crore, and Najafgarh INR 12.97 crore. Despite Najafgarh recording the lowest taxpayer count, revenue from the zone remained considerable. In terms of taxpayer numbers, the West zone ranked first with 12,623 properties paying tax, closely followed by Shahdara (South) at 12,321 and City SP at 10,990. Strong participation was also observed in Rohini, Keshavpuram, Shahdara (North), and Karol Bagh, while zones such as Central, South, and Civil Lines reflected relatively lower numbers.
Officials attributed the success of the Suniyo scheme to enhanced awareness initiatives, citizen outreach, and the convenience of digital payment options, which have notably reduced problems such as cheque bounce. The civic body noted that the initiative has not only improved revenue but also expanded the taxpayer base by bringing a larger share of property owners into compliance.
MCD officials highlighted that widespread awareness and digital payment integration were instrumental in achieving the surge. The scheme's ability to draw in over one lakh taxpayers indicates growing public engagement and trust, while also strengthening the city's financial foundation by ensuring a broader property tax compliance base.
