A devastating building collapse in Virar, a part of Maharashtra's Palghar district, has claimed the lives of a young woman and her two-year-old daughter. The fatal incident occurred early Wednesday morning when the rear portion of a four-storey building, identified as Ramabai Apartment, caved in and fell onto a nearby chawl.


The tragedy took place at 12:05 am, and officials have confirmed that a 24-year-old woman and her toddler were killed, while nine other individuals sustained injuries. Rescue teams have been on site for over 18 hours, meticulously removing debris in a desperate search for survivors. A preliminary assessment suggests that between six and seven people may still be trapped beneath the rubble.

The building, which was reportedly constructed in 2012 and contains a total of 50 flats, has been described as "illegal" by officials. The part that collapsed contained 12 apartments, leaving dozens of families displaced and underscoring the serious dangers posed by unapproved and structurally unsound constructions. The ongoing rescue efforts are focused on the removal of debris to ensure no one is left behind.
