An international delegation from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) paid a study visit to Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) earlier this week to review the city's urban development practices and innovative solid waste management systems. The visit, facilitated by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, included detailed presentations on infrastructure, sustainability initiatives, and future roadmaps, as well as site visits to pioneering projects such as textile recycling facilities, nature parks, and advanced water treatment plants.
A high-level delegation from the Asian Development Bank visited Navi Mumbai earlier this week under the coordination of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs to study the city's infrastructure, public service delivery, and innovative solid waste management practices. The group examined key features of Navi Mumbai and reviewed potential opportunities for future development.
Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde welcomed the ADB's urban development specialist Patrick Lavery, project analyst Lindy Lois M Gamolo, senior officials Ankit and Minakshi Ajmera, along with Rahul Singh, NPMU consultant from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, and UWM expert Prashant Mahapatra. Senior NMMC officials, including Additional Commissioner Sunil Pawar, City Engineer Shirish Aradwad, Chief Accounts and Finance Officer Satyawan Ubale, Deputy Commissioners of Solid Waste Management Dr Ajay Gadade and Smita Kale, and other department heads were also present.
Dr Shinde delivered an extensive presentation covering the unique features of Navi Mumbai, its civic services, infrastructure network, and the long-term roadmap for urban growth. Delegation members engaged in discussions with civic authorities on the city's challenges, technological adoption, and policies supporting sustainable development.
As part of the visit, the delegation inspected the Integrated Command and Control Centre at the municipal headquarters, which monitors and manages daily solid waste operations. They expressed satisfaction with the efficiency of the system. The group also toured the country's first Textile Recycling Facility (TRF) at CBD Belapur, launched with support from the Ministry of Textiles, to observe waste-to-resource innovations.
Further, the delegation visited Wonders Park in Nerul, the eco-park developed on a reclaimed dumping ground in Koparkhairane, and the Miyawaki-style urban forest established nearby. They also reviewed sustainable projects such as the aspirational toilet built under the waste-to-wealth concept and the advanced tertiary sewage treatment plant, appreciating NMMC's adoption of modern technologies.
The study tour highlighted Navi Mumbai's achievements in solid waste management, sanitation initiatives, and sustainable infrastructure. With the city's rapid development, this international visit is expected to pave the way for potential collaborations between NMMC and ADB in shaping future urban projects.
By showcasing pioneering efforts such as textile recycling, urban forestry, and advanced waste processing systems, the city demonstrated its readiness to embrace global urban practices. The discussions also opened the possibility of future collaboration with ADB, marking a step towards strengthening international partnerships for Navi Mumbai's continued growth and development.
