Synopsis

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has decided to monitor reconstructed houses in Durga Pituri Lane and nearby areas for ten years to address concerns about possible damage caused by metro operations. The move comes after residents expressed fears of recurring structural failures, while councillors urged the creation of a dedicated monitoring cell and experts from Jadavpur University were brought in to ensure construction quality and safety.

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has announced a decade-long monitoring mechanism for reconstructed houses in Durga Pituri Lane and adjoining areas, following worries over structural stability linked to metro rail tunnelling. The civic authority stated that the Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation would remain accountable if fresh damage were detected in any of the rebuilt structures during this period.

Concerns were raised during a civic meeting where a local councillor pointed out that while metro officials had promised new houses to displaced residents within two years, people remained apprehensive about future safety. The councillor proposed the establishment of a dedicated monitoring cell, which would not only ensure proper standards in construction but also keep track of any cracks or weaknesses that might appear over time.

In response, the mayor confirmed that 23 building plans submitted by the metro authority had already received approval. He also underlined that a technical committee, consisting of experts from Jadavpur University, would oversee the process. Their role will be to uphold construction standards, certify safety protocols, and act as an independent authority to monitor the health of the reconstructed buildings.

By enforcing accountability and deploying academic expertise, the civic body aims to restore public confidence while preventing the recurrence of past structural mishaps in the affected neighbourhoods.

With clear accountability placed on the metro authority and oversight provided by a team of technical experts, the civic body is seeking to reassure residents that their newly built homes will remain safe, stable and properly maintained in the years to come.
