Synopsis

The Thane Municipal Corporation has launched a dedicated squad to curb unauthorised constructions in Diva and Mumbra, areas that have witnessed a spurt in such activity. The decision followed a high-level review, after which officials took immediate action against 227 illegal structures and registered 24 criminal cases. With the monsoon intensifying structural risks, the civic body also ordered evacuations of unsafe buildings while tasking the squad with continuous vigilance and enforcement.

The Thane Municipal Corporation has formed a special squad to intensify action against illegal constructions, particularly in the rapidly growing suburbs of Diva and Mumbra. The move came after a review meeting where the civic commissioner directed stronger measures to counter unauthorised building activity.

Acting on these orders, officials initiated proceedings against 227 illegal structures and lodged 24 criminal cases against developers and property owners involved. With the ongoing monsoon season increasing the vulnerability of unsafe properties, the administration further instructed immediate evacuation of residents from dilapidated and hazardous buildings.

Political representatives and local activists have demanded accountability from civic officials suspected of turning a blind eye to illegal developments. They argued that in many cases, partial occupancy during construction is deliberately permitted, making demolition more difficult at a later stage.

The newly created enforcement team has been placed under the charge of the Deputy Municipal Commissioner, with ward-level staff providing operational support. The unit is expected to maintain round-the-clock vigilance across identified hot-spots and ensure that illegal structures are swiftly addressed.

By combining strict enforcement with preventive measures such as evacuations, the administration is seeking to safeguard both urban planning norms and public safety. With greater political and civic pressure for accountability, the new squad will need to deliver consistent results to restore order and ensure compliance in the city's most vulnerable localities.
