Chamarajanagar Zilla Panchayat's 2024-25 housing survey uncovered 35,050 houseless families and 4,471 site-less families across the district. Conducted using GPS verification and physical site inspections, the survey found the highest numbers in Chamarajanagar and Gundlupet taluks. The findings also highlighted social distribution, including Scheduled Castes and Tribes. Families without sites face challenges in constructing homes despite prior allotments. The Panchayat has recommended government-backed housing schemes for these families, awaiting state-level approval.
Chamarajanagar Zilla Panchayat recently completed a comprehensive housing survey for the 2024-25 period, identifying a substantial number of families living without homes. The survey recorded 35,050 houseless families and 4,471 families without land sites. Based on the findings, the Panchayat has suggested that these families receive houses through existing government housing schemes, though the proposals are now pending state-level approval.
Chamarajanagar taluk reported the largest number of houseless families at 11,582, followed closely by Gundlupet with 10,782 families. Other taluks, including Hanur, Kollegal, and Yelandur, also recorded significant numbers. The survey revealed social category distribution, noting 11,358 families from Scheduled Castes, 4,453 from Scheduled Tribes, and 19,239 from other general categories, reflecting a broad spectrum of communities affected by housing shortages.
Among the 4,471 site-less families, many had previously been allotted houses under earlier government programs but faced obstacles in construction due to the absence of land. The Panchayat is considering providing land along with the house allotments to address this critical issue.
To ensure accuracy and authenticity, the survey incorporated GPS-based verification and on-site physical inspections. Gram Panchayat staff, including development officers and secretaries, conducted these visits, documenting land availability and capturing photographs of sites. This process aimed to prevent irregularities and ensure only genuine beneficiaries are recognized.
The survey is the first major housing assessment in Chamarajanagar in over five years, marking a significant effort to update data on the district's housing needs. Officials believe that this detailed identification process will help direct resources efficiently and prioritize families in urgent need of housing support.
