Synopsis

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) recently carried out demolition drives in Airoli and Koparkhairane against unauthorized constructions that continued despite prior notices. Acting under the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, 1966, the Encroachment Department removed illegal structures, imposed fines, and deployed manpower and equipment for the operations. The drives were conducted under the supervision of senior officials, with support from the local police. Authorities indicated that such anti-encroachment actions will continue more strictly going forward.

The Encroachment Department of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) undertook eviction actions in Airoli and Koparkhairane after property owners failed to comply with demolition notices. Despite being served notices under Section 53(1A) and Section 54 of the Maharashtra Regional Planning and Town Planning Act, 1966, the concerned individuals proceeded with unauthorized construction.

In Airoli, two illegal structures located at B-200 and B-491 in Sector 2 were identified. These were built without approval by Mr. Khandu Manik Tandel and Mr. Rameshwar Gawli. The property owners were earlier directed to remove the constructions on their own, but no action was taken. Following this, the Encroachment Department organized a demolition drive under the supervision of Divisional Officer Sunil Kathole. The operation involved eight laborers, two breakers, a gas cutter, and support from NMMC police personnel. Alongside the demolition, a penalty of INR 25,000 was collected from the property owner.

A similar case was addressed in Koparkhairane, where unauthorized construction was reported at Room No. 668, Sector 18, belonging to Shrimati Lakshmibai Motiram Ghodekar. Despite receiving a notice earlier this month under Section 54 of the Act, the construction work continued. The Koparkhairane division, led by Assistant Commissioner Bharat U. Dhande and Junior Engineer Chandrakant Dhotre, carried out a demolition drive with six laborers, two electronic hammers, one pickup van, a gas cutter, and a JCB. A fine of INR 10,000 was imposed during this action.

Both demolition operations were carried out under the instructions of Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde, with guidance from Additional Commissioner Dr. Rahul Gethe and Deputy Commissioner (Encroachment) Dr. Kailas Gaikwad. NMMC officials confirmed that such anti-encroachment drives will be intensified to curb unauthorized construction across the city.
