The Prime Minister inaugurated the first 660 MW unit of the 1,320 MW Buxar thermal power project in Bihar, developed by SJVN at Chausa. Built at an investment of INR 13,756.56 crore, the project is expected to generate nearly 9,828.72 million units of electricity annually, with 85 per cent of the supply reserved for Bihar. Construction required large quantities of steel and cement, supporting Indian industries and creating employment for about 5,000 workers each year. With its advanced technology and regional focus, the project is set to ease shortages and improve power availability in the eastern region.
The Prime Minister inaugurated the first 660 MW unit of SJVN's 1,320 MW Buxar thermal power project in Bihar through a virtual ceremony. The project is being developed by SJVN Thermal Private Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of SJVN, at Chausa in Buxar district. The foundation stone for this plant was laid in 2019, and the project has now reached a major milestone with the completion of its first unit.
The plant is being built with a total investment of INR 13,756.56 crore. Once fully operational, it will generate nearly 9,828.72 million units of electricity every year. Under a long-term power purchase agreement, 85 per cent of this power has been allocated to Bihar. The remaining share will be supplied to other states in the eastern region. This is expected to help reduce peak-hour shortages and strengthen the overall energy security of the region.
Construction of the project required the use of around 2,54,932 metric tonnes of steel and 2,80,362 tonnes of cement, much of it sourced domestically. This supported the government's vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat by giving a push to Indian manufacturers and suppliers. During construction, about 5,000 workers were engaged annually, creating direct and indirect employment and benefitting the local economy. Services such as transport, markets, hotels, and small businesses in the region also gained from the project activity.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Bihar's Governor Arif Mohammed Khan and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, along with other dignitaries. Company officials highlighted that the plant is based on supercritical technology, which allows better efficiency with lower environmental impact compared to older thermal plants.
SJVN, which started with its first hydroelectric project in Himachal Pradesh, has since expanded into thermal, solar, wind, and transmission sectors. The Buxar project adds to its growing portfolio and marks one of its most significant thermal ventures.
