This move is expected to provide modern homes and improved facilities to families living in the Ramapir Tekra slum area.
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi is set to embark on a two-day visit to Gujarat starting on August 25. During his visit, he will inaugurate 1,449 houses and 130 shops built at a cost of INR 133.42 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) in Ahmedabad. The project, which aims to provide modern homes and improved facilities to families living in the slum area of Ramapir Tekra, was executed under the Gujarat government's Slum Rehabilitation and Redevelopment Policy.
According to a government statement, across Gujarat, over 9.66 lakh houses have been sanctioned under the PMAY (Urban) against a target of 7.64 lakh, with the construction of about 9.07 lakh houses already completed. This makes Gujarat a frontrunner in implementing the PMAY scheme. To support beneficiaries in rural areas, the state government has introduced an additional assistance of INR 50,000 per house under PMAY (Rural) from fiscal year 2025-26. This support is fully funded by the state's share and is aimed at helping beneficiaries achieve their housing targets. The government also provides an additional incentive of INR 20,000 for beneficiaries who complete their house construction within six months, as well as INR 5,000 for bathroom construction for women beneficiaries.
This project is a key part of the government's "Housing for All" mission, which aims to provide affordable and dignified living for all eligible urban households. Gujarat has been at the forefront of this initiative, becoming the first state to get approval for the Affordable Rental Housing Complexes (ARHC) scheme and one of six states selected to implement the Light House Project, which uses modern monolithic concrete construction technology. The total expenditure incurred under the PMAY scheme in Gujarat from 2016-17 to August 20, 2025, has been INR 8,936.55 crore.
