Retail inflation for farm and rural workers moderated in July, dropping to 0.77 per cent for agricultural labourers and 1.01 per cent for rural labourers, down from higher figures in June. The All-India Consumer Price Index rose slightly for both groups, while food inflation contracted to -1.56 per cent and -1.13 per cent, making essential commodities more affordable. Based on data from 787 sample villages across 34 States and Union Territories, the figures reflect easing price pressures on rural households. Analysts view the moderation as a sign of relative stability in the rural economy after earlier fluctuations.
Retail inflation for farm and rural workers recorded a noticeable slowdown in July, falling to 0.77 per cent for agricultural labourers and 1.01 per cent for rural labourers. This marks a significant decline from June, when the rates were 1.42 per cent and 1.73 per cent, respectively, according to Labour Ministry data.
The All-India Consumer Price Index (CPI) for Agricultural Labourers rose by 1.23 points to 135.31, while the index for Rural Labourers increased by 1.30 points to 135.66. The Food Index also recorded an upward movement, gaining 1.94 points for agricultural labourers and 2.16 points for rural labourers in July.
Despite the rise in the indices, food inflation continued to contract, standing at -1.56 per cent for agricultural labourers and -1.13 per cent for rural labourers. This indicates that essential food items have become slightly more affordable for rural households compared to previous months.
These figures are based on data collected from 787 sample villages across 34 States and Union Territories, with the base year of 2019=100. The Labour Bureau under the Ministry of Labour & Employment releases these CPI numbers every month, tracking price movements for rural and agricultural workers.
Earlier this year, rural inflation had experienced higher rates due to fluctuations in food prices and agricultural output. The current moderation suggests a period of relative stability, offering some relief to farm households that rely heavily on stable prices for daily essentials. Analysts note that while the overall indices show steady growth, the contraction in food inflation is a key factor in easing the financial pressure on rural workers.
