Maharashtra Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule has instructed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to halt all demolition activities targeting unauthorized constructions in North Mumbai during the Ganesh festival. This directive follows numerous appeals from local residents who expressed concerns about the timing of the ongoing demolition drives.
Minister Bawankule emphasized that no notices should be issued to citizens that could cause fear or anxiety during the festive season. He clarified that any necessary actions should be postponed until after the festival concludes. The minister's decision reflects a commitment to maintaining public peace and order during a time of cultural significance.
The BMC had initiated demolition drives against unauthorized structures in North Mumbai, citing irregularities in construction documents. A committee established to review construction-related records identified discrepancies in 165 out of 884 boundary maps and nine documents from the Goregaon city survey office. These findings led to the BMC's decision to demolish certain structures deemed unauthorized.
While the minister has ordered a suspension of demolition activities during the festival, he has also warned that individuals involved in preparing forged or fake construction documents will not be granted immunity. He clarified that strict legal action would be taken against such individuals.
After the conclusion of the Ganesh festival, a detailed review meeting will be held at the BMC office to assess the situation and determine the appropriate course of action regarding unauthorized constructions. This approach aims to balance the enforcement of building regulations with the need to respect cultural practices and public sentiments during the festive period.
