The Union Cabinet cleared a proposal for the development of a new greenfield airport at Kota-Bundi in Rajasthan at an estimated investment of INR 1,507 crore. The project, to be executed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) using internal accruals, is planned for completion within two years. With a passenger handling capacity of two million annually, the airport is expected to enhance regional connectivity, support Kota's industrial and educational prominence, and contribute significantly to the local economy.
The Union Cabinet, in a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, approved the establishment of a greenfield airport at Kota-Bundi in Rajasthan, with an estimated outlay of INR 1,507 crore. The project will be developed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and is scheduled to be completed within 24 months.
According to Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Rajasthan government has allocated 440.06 hectares of land, free of cost, for the construction. The new airport will be located around 23 kilometres away from the existing Kota airport, which cannot be expanded for commercial operations due to limited land availability and urbanisation in the surrounding area.
The project design includes a 20,000 square metre terminal building capable of handling 1,000 passengers during peak hours and an annual capacity of two million passengers. It will feature a 3,200-metre-long runway, seven parking bays for Airbus A321 type aircraft, two link taxiways, an air traffic control and technical block, a fire station, a car park, and other allied facilities.
The state-owned AAI will finance the project entirely through its internal resources. Vaishnaw stated that the airport is set to improve regional connectivity, boost the local economy, and support Kota's position as Rajasthan's industrial hub as well as a leading educational coaching destination.
Currently, the existing Kota airport, also under AAI, has a 1,220-metre runway suitable only for smaller aircraft such as the Dornier DO-228, with a 400 square metre terminal that can accommodate just 50 passengers during peak hours.
Highlighting the government's focus on aviation infrastructure, Vaishnaw noted that the number of operational airports in India has more than doubled in the past 11 years, reaching 162 compared with 74 in 2014. Passenger traffic, he added, has risen to 41.2 crore this year from 16.8 crore in 2014.
With a modern facility designed to handle significantly higher passenger volumes, the new airport will address future air traffic demand while positioning Kota as a stronger industrial and educational hub. By funding the project through internal accruals, AAI ensures a sustainable approach that aligns with the broader expansion of India's civil aviation sector.
