Synopsis

Ahmedabad-based Torrent Group unveiled a green hydrogen facility in Gorakhpur earlier this week, marking Uttar Pradesh's first and India's second such project. The plant, developed jointly by Torrent Power and Torrent Gas, produces 72 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, which is blended at up to 2 percent with natural gas and distributed via existing pipelines to homes, CNG stations, and industries. The state government, backed by its Green Hydrogen Policy, aims to reach a production target of 1 million tonnes per year. This initiative embeds clean energy into daily life, supporting national net-zero ambitions and fostering a low-carbon economy.

Torrent Group has now made green hydrogen part of everyday life in Gorakhpur. This week, the company via its affiliates Torrent Power and Torrent Gas launched the state's first green hydrogen plant and the largest green hydrogen-natural gas blending project in the city gas distribution (CGD) sector nationally.

The facility yields roughly 72 tonnes of green hydrogen per annum, which is mixed into the natural gas supply at up to 2 percent strength. That blended fuel is channeled through the CGD network to households, CNG filling stations, and industrial clients across the region.

This development follows UP's Green Hydrogen Policy, thanks to which the state now targets an ambitious production goal of 1 million tonnes annually. The policy paves the way for broader clean energy investments and positions the region as a growing hydrogen hub.

Green hydrogen, produced by splitting water using renewable energy such as solar, wind, or hydropower offers a cleaner alternative to fossil-based hydrogen by emitting no direct carbon emissions. Blending it with natural gas further reduces environmental impact while utilising existing infrastructure and encouraging early demand for hydrogen.

Officials highlighted how this shift is already easing daily life. The availability of piped natural gas (PNG) has brought convenience, safety, and savings to households, particularly benefiting homemakers, while the use of CNG in transport has helped curb pollution and reduce fuel costs. Industries, too, are reaping economic and environmental dividends.

The state's chief minister has praised the initiative, calling green hydrogen 'the energy of the future' and signalling that UP with its abundant water resources is well-placed to emerge as a key production centre. He stressed that green hydrogen will become more affordable in time, likening its trajectory to the widespread adoption and falling costs of mobile phones. Environmental concerns such as deforestation and chemical-intensive farming, which contribute to diseases like cancer and liver ailments, further underscore the urgency for cleaner energy sources.

Torrent Group's Director, Jinal Mehta, said that integrating green hydrogen into Gorakhpur's gas grid delivers a tangible step towards India's net-zero goals. She emphasized that the plant represents the first in a long-range plan to establish large-scale green hydrogen facilities across the nation to support various applications including blending in CGD networks
