The Haryana Shahari Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP) has decided to renovate and allot 1,088 vacant affordable flats in Sector 47, Gurugram, which were constructed in 2010 under the Ashiana Scheme for economically weaker sections (EWS). Initially, these flats remained unallotted for over 15 years due to procedural delays and disputes over eligibility, and HSVP had considered demolishing them to use the land for high-end housing. Following public opposition and a complaint escalated to the Prime Minister's Office, HSVP approved an INR 8 crore renovation plan, with allotments to eligible families scheduled after repairs.
The Haryana Shahari Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP) has shifted its approach regarding the long-vacant 1,088 EWS flats in Sector 47, Gurugram, opting for renovation and allotment instead of demolition. These flats, built in 2010 under the Ashiana scheme, were meant to provide affordable housing for economically weaker families.
Over the years, delays in verifying eligibility and administrative hurdles left the flats unused for more than 15 years. HSVP had initially proposed demolishing the units to monetize the prime land for high-end group housing, a plan that faced opposition from local activists and housing advocates.
HSVP has clarified that no higher authority had directed the demolition of the Sector 47 flats. Subsequently, the authority sanctioned INR 8 crore for repairs and renovation. Tenders for the renovation work have been issued, with the refurbishment expected to begin shortly. Allotments will be made to eligible families once the renovation is completed.
Previously, HSVP had planned to relocate potential EWS allottees to a new multi-storey complex in Sector 9. However, logistical challenges and the deteriorated condition of the Sector 47 units prompted the reconsideration. The current decision not only preserves the existing flats but also ensures they fulfill their intended role of providing affordable housing.
