The Bombay High Court has directed the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to remove 462 remaining illegal structures on farmland near Bhiwandi by February 2026. The order, issued by a bench of Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice Sandeep Marne, is in response to a 2013 Public Interest Litigation (PIL) that highlighted widespread unauthorized construction. This ruling reinforces the court's strict stance against illegal development and compels authorities to complete a long-pending enforcement drive.
The Bombay High Court on August 14, 2025, directed the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to remove 462 illegal structures on farmland near Bhiwandi by February 2026. This action follows a long-standing Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed in 2013 that brought attention to widespread unauthorized construction. The order, issued by a division bench of Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice Sandeep Marne, reinforces the court's strict stance against illegal development and compels authorities to complete a long-pending enforcement drive.
The court's directive follows a previous effort by the MMRDA, which, acting on court orders in 2020, surveyed 18,894 structures in 60 villages and issued 6,582 demolition notices. It also requested the disconnection of water and electricity supply to these structures. The authority informed the court that after a demolition drive, 462 illegal structures remained. In response, the court directed the MMRDA to clear the remaining buildings and granted its request for police protection during the eviction, to prevent any obstruction from residents. Advocate Mohan Tekavde, representing the MMRDA, assured the court that the authority would ensure full compliance with the order.
The issue of illegal constructions has long plagued the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), particularly in fast-developing areas where demand for housing and commercial spaces has outpaced regulatory oversight. The court's intervention and directive to the MMRDA to act decisively on illegal constructions highlights a strong stance against unauthorized development and a commitment to protecting the integrity of urban planning in the region.
