Synopsis

Uttar Pradesh's Rural Development Minister disclosed in the Assembly that over 1.3 million homes have been approved for the economically weaker sections under central and state housing schemes. She explained that these sanctions fall under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) and the Mukhyamantri Awas Yojana (MAY), with the allocation process set to begin soon. A detailed survey has already covered more than 5.7 million residents, identifying beneficiaries eligible for assistance. The announcement underlines the government's ongoing efforts to address the state's housing needs.

During a recent session of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly, the state's Rural Development Minister reported substantial progress in delivering housing to the poor and destitute. She informed members that in the three financial years spanning from 2022-23 to 2024-25, a total of 1,044,876 homes were sanctioned under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), a flagship central government initiative aimed at providing affordable housing to rural and urban low-income households.

In addition to these, 262,594 homes received approval under the Mukhyamantri Awas Yojana (MAY), a state-level programme designed to complement the PMAY by reaching those who may not qualify under central criteria but are still in urgent need of shelter. Together, these two schemes have brought the total number of sanctioned homes to more than 1.3 million.

The minister stated that an extensive survey has been carried out to ensure that housing assistance reaches the intended recipients. This survey has already covered approximately 5.773 million people across the state, identifying those living in inadequate conditions and in need of immediate support. According to her, the allocation of these sanctioned homes will begin shortly, with local authorities finalising beneficiary lists based on survey findings.

She emphasised that these initiatives are part of a larger commitment by the state government to uplift the living standards of economically weaker sections and ensure access to secure and permanent housing.

With both central and state schemes working in tandem and a meticulous survey already completed, the groundwork has been laid for swift allotment. The upcoming distribution phase is expected to translate policy into real change, offering security and dignity to thousands of families who have long awaited stable housing.
