Synopsis

The promenade section of the Mumbai Coastal Road project will open to the public on Independence Day August 15, 2025. A 5.25 km stretch of the total 7.5 km promenade, which features pedestrian pathways, cycling tracks, and viewing decks, will be opened to the public. The inauguration will also mark the opening of the Coastal Road for 24x7 vehicular traffic. The promenade is the first major public amenity to be opened on the Coastal Road, which aims to ease traffic congestion between south and north Mumbai.

A 5.25 km section of the promenade along the Mumbai Coastal Road is set to open to the public at 4:30 pm on Friday, August 15, 2025. This inauguration, on Independence Day eve, will be a major milestone for the project, which aims to ease traffic congestion between south and north Mumbai. The 10.5 km long Coastal Road project will extend from Princess Street Flyover at Marine Lines to the Worli end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link.

The promenade, which is designed to be more than twice the length of the iconic Marine Drive promenade, will provide citizens with pedestrian pathways, cycling tracks, and viewing decks. It will also have four pedestrian underpasses (PUPs) at locations such as Birla Matushri Thackeray School in Walkeshwar, Chhota Chowpatty near Dr Abdul Gaffar Khan Marg, the Haji Ali junction, and near the Lotus bus stop. The underpasses will have staircases as well as ramps for the disabled and cycles, along with benches, bio-toilets, and drinking water facilities.

The opening will be done through a virtual inauguration on Friday evening in the presence of Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis and his deputies Shri Eknath Shinde and Shri Ajit Pawar. Civic Chief Bhushan Gagrani, PWD minister Ravindra Chavan, tourism minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha, and MLA Ashish Shelar will also be present.

This launch is expected to draw significant public interest, offering residents and visitors a new recreational destination along Mumbai's coastline. It also signals the beginning of more such civic spaces being integrated into large-scale transport projects in the city.
