The government's PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSG: MBY), launched in early 2024, has successfully enabled rooftop solar installations in over 16.78 lakh households, with more than INR 9,280 crore disbursed as Central Financial Assistance. This initiative aims to reach one crore residential rooftop solar setups by 2026-27. The scheme effectively merged with the earlier Grid Connected Rooftop Solar Programme Phase-II, which had been active since 2019 and extended until March 2026. These efforts reflect a growing push toward renewable energy adoption at the household level across the country.
The government has reported significant progress in promoting residential rooftop solar power through the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSG: MBY). Since its launch in February 2024, this program has benefited a total of 16.78 lakh households with rooftop solar installations. Correspondingly, over INR 9,280 crore has been disbursed as Central Financial Assistance (CFA) to these beneficiaries, underlining strong financial support from the central government.
Implemented by the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE), the PMSG: MBY is designed to scale up rooftop solar installations to cover one crore households in the residential sector by 2026-27. This ambitious target highlights the government's commitment to increasing clean energy adoption and reducing dependence on conventional power sources at the household level.
Prior to this, the MNRE had been running the Grid Connected Rooftop Solar Programme Phase-II, launched in March 2019, which aimed to expand solar capacity by incentivizing rooftop solar systems. This program's timeline was extended until March 2026 to continue supporting solar growth. However, with the introduction of PMSG: MBY, the earlier rooftop solar initiative was integrated into this broader scheme, consolidating efforts for better reach and effectiveness.
The scheme provides financial aid to households, making solar installations more affordable and accessible. This move aligns with India's larger renewable energy goals and its commitment to climate change mitigation through clean energy expansion.
