Synopsis

Local self-government department granted technical approval for the Thanal Housing Project in Thiruvananthapuram, bringing relief to 99 families, many of whom are differently abled. With revised cost estimates based on the 2024 Schedule of Rates, the Uralungal Labour Contract Co-operative Society is ready to commence constructing a two-storey, 136-unit residential complex spanning two acres. Groundwork has already been completed, and the project is expected to finish within 18 months once construction begins.

Putting an end to months of uncertainty, the local self-government department provided technical sanction last week for the Thanal Housing Project in Priyadarshini Nagar, Muttathara. This decision brought relief to 99 families-including vulnerable groups-who had been living in poor conditions since construction was stalled due to pending approvals.

The project, awarded to the Uralungal Labour Contract Co-operative Society on a INR 20 crore contract, had faced delays because cost estimates were based on the outdated 2018 Delhi Schedule of Rates. Following a revision to the 2024 Schedule of Rates, the chief engineer of the department authorised the project.

The corporation secretary stated that the technical approval would pave the way for much-needed progress. With updated estimates in place, construction could begin shortly, delivering safe and dignified housing to families who have waited a long time.

The development, now designed as a two-storey complex to meet height restrictions set by the Airport Authority of India, will feature 136 apartments of 550 sq ft each, arranged in blocks of four over two acres. It is aimed at rehabilitating persons with disabilities, flood-affected individuals, and displaced fishermen.

The project had been stalled for 18 months since the tender was awarded, but with groundwork and soil testing already completed, there are no further administrative obstacles. Once work commences, completion is expected within 18 months.

With preparatory work completed and construction set to start soon, the scheme is positioned to deliver secure homes and improve living conditions for some of the city's most vulnerable communities.
