Synopsis

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) recently carried out a demolition drive in Airoli against unauthorised structures, following non-compliance with earlier notices issued under the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, 1966. Acting on the directives of the municipal commissioner and senior officials, the encroachment department demolished illegal buildings and roadside slums. Penalties amounting to INR 1,00,000 were collected from the violators, and the corporation affirmed its commitment to continuing strict anti-encroachment measures.

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation's encroachment department conducted a decisive demolition drive in the Airoli division after recipients of prior notices failed to comply. The action was taken under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde, Additional Commissioner (2) Dr Rahul Gethe, and Deputy Commissioner (Encroachment) Dr Kailas Gaikwad.

Within the G-Division limits, unauthorised construction was found adjacent to Chandrabai Heights in Sector 2, Airoli, and at Samruddhi Hotel, Plot No 22, Sector 1, Airoli. These developments, undertaken by Vinod Kamble and Vinod Chhaganbhai Jajoria without valid building permissions, had been earlier served notices under Sections 53(1A) and 54 of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, 1966. The owners were required to remove the illegal structures voluntarily, but they continued construction despite warnings.

Subsequently, the unauthorised constructions were demolished, and a penalty of INR 50,000 per violator, totalling INR 1,00,000, was recovered. In addition, illegal roadside slums near the water tank in Sector 9, along the Ghansoli-Airoli highway, which were obstructing the road, were also removed.

The operation was supported by Assistant Commissioner and Division Officer Sunil Kathole, encroachment department officials and staff, ten labourers, one JCB, two breakers, a gas cutter, and police personnel.

The Airoli demolition drive underscores the civic body's commitment to taking decisive action against violators, regardless of prior warnings, in order to maintain orderly urban development in Navi Mumbai.
