The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC), operator of the city's underground Aqua Line (Metro Line 3), plans to introduce promotional offers and discounts to increase its ridership. The corporation will appoint an agency to handle these activities by the end of 2025, a few months after the full 33.5 km line is operational. This move is designed to boost passenger numbers and help achieve the projected daily ridership of 1.4 million, as the current usage on newly opened sections is below capacity.
The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC), which operates the city's underground Aqua Line, plans to introduce promotional offers and discounts to increase its ridership. The corporation will appoint an agency to carry out these activities by the end of 2025, following the full opening of the metro line.
The 33.5 km Aqua Line connects south Mumbai to Aarey and is divided into three sections. The first section was inaugurated in October 2024, and the second in May this year. The final portion up to Cuffe Parade is scheduled for inauguration by the end of August 2025, after which the entire line will be operational.
The corporation is considering offering discount coupons for the first monthly pass to help people switch from other forms of transport. The agency, if set up, would identify major commercial buildings and corporate offices near the Metro Line 3 stations for collaboration. As part of these promotional activities, manned and unmanned kiosks will be set up to draw potential riders to the metro's mobile application.
A document from the MMRC revealed that the corporation is exploring potential collaborations with different online platforms, mobile wallets, as well as the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) and the Indian Railways' UTS (Unreserved Ticketing System) for booking tickets. For last-mile connectivity, the MMRC is also looking into intermediate public transport, private taxi operators, e-bike agencies, and bus operators. The corporation is also exploring a tie-up with Google Maps to integrate the line into its search results, making it easier for people to plan their commute.
The current 12.69 km stretch, which includes the recently opened 9.77 km section, sees a daily ridership of over 52,500 people during weekdays. Before the section from Bandra Kurla Complex to Worli's Acharya Atre Chowk was opened, the ridership was at a low average of 91 passengers per trip. With each train's maximum capacity being 2,500 people, the MMRC had projected the line would carry 1.4 million passengers per day once the entire 33.5 km route is operational. This significant gap between current and projected ridership is a key reason for the new push for promotional activities.
