Deputy Chief Minister Shri Eknath Shinde has announced that trial runs for Mumbai Metro Line 4, from Wadala to Kasarvadavli, will begin in September, with commercial operations expected by year-end. Spanning 32.3 km and costing INR 14,500 crore, the line will have 32 stations and interchanges with Metro 2B, 5, and 6, boosting connectivity and reducing road congestion. The first phase, Wadala-Ghatkopar, is nearly complete, with track laying and system integration underway. Once fully operational, Line 4 is projected to carry over 8 lakh passengers daily, cutting travel time between south-central Mumbai and Thane and strengthening the city's metro network.
Deputy Chief Minister Shri Eknath Shinde recently announced that trial runs for Mumbai Metro Line 4, connecting Wadala to Kasarvadavli, will begin in September. The announcement was made at a review meeting for the project, which is being executed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). Commercial operations are expected to start by the end of this year.
The 32.3 km corridor, built at an estimated cost of INR 14,500 crore, is seen as a major step in improving the city's public transport network and easing congestion on roads. The line, which has 32 stations, is expected to significantly reduce travel time between south-central Mumbai and Thane. This is particularly relevant as the project's original deadline was 2024, indicating that the new timeline meets a revised schedule.
The elevated corridor will have interchanges with Metro 2B, Metro 5, and Metro 6, which will help improve connectivity across the city's entire metro network. The line is being developed in three phases, with the first phase, between Wadala and Ghatkopar, being the one that will be ready for trial runs in September. Officials said that construction is in the final stages, with track laying and system integration currently underway. Once fully operational, Metro Line 4 is expected to carry over 8 lakh passengers daily.
