Synopsis

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has installed a 58-metre-long, 450-tonne steel span over the Pantnagar-Ghatkopar bus stand for Metro Line 4, completing the task in just two nights despite heavy rain, busy traffic, and limited space. Using high-capacity cranes, trailers, and other specialised equipment, over 100 workers and engineers, supported by traffic management teams, ensured safe execution. The Wadala-Kasarvadavali Metro Line 4 is now 84.5% complete. This milestone marks a major step toward enhancing connectivity and cutting travel times across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, with MMRDA crediting government agencies for their cooperation in delivering the challenging operation.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has successfully installed a steel span over the Pantnagar-Ghatkopar bus stand in Ghatkopar East, marking a major step forward in the progress of Metro Line 4. The 58-metre-long, 3.1-metre-high span, weighing 450 tonnes and comprising five steel girders, was lifted and positioned at its designated location within just two nights.

The work was executed under challenging conditions, including persistent heavy rainfall, continuous traffic flow on the Andheri-Ghatkopar Link Road, and limited operational space due to the nearby Somaiya Nallah. To ensure smooth progress, MMRDA deployed additional resources, including cranes of 700-metric-ton and 500-metric-ton capacity, with backup cranes of 500-ton and 80-ton capacity.

More than 100 workers, engineers, and essential safety personnel were involved, supported by over 50 trained traffic management staff. Equipment deployed included six trailers, three Hydras, three Eicher trucks, three manlifters, and an ambulance stationed for emergencies.

The Wadala-Kasarvadavali Metro Line 4 project is currently 84.5% complete. The successful placement of this span represents not only a technical achievement but also a significant advancement towards improving connectivity and reducing travel time in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. MMRDA acknowledged the guidance and cooperation of government authorities and agencies, noting their essential role in the safe and efficient execution of the work.
