Indore has taken a major step in digital governance by becoming the first Indian city to launch a QR-code based digital address system. Starting with Ward 82 in Sudama Nagar, every house is now being equipped with a GPS-linked QR code plate that opens a unique digital profile via the national DigiPIN platform. Residents can now access services such as tax payments, utility bills, civic records, and emergency assistance through their phones. This pilot is free of cost and aims to gradually cover around 700,000 properties. The initiative also promises future infrastructure upgrades in the area.
Indore has officially rolled out India's first digital address system using QR codes, beginning with a pilot in Ward 82 of Sudama Nagar. The initiative, led by the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC), replaces traditional home addresses with GPS-linked QR code plates fixed outside residences. These codes are connected to the DigiPIN system, developed by India Post in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad, NRSC, and ISRO.
Each household under this project receives a unique digital plate. When scanned through a mobile phone, it brings up a digital profile that allows residents to view and pay property and water taxes, check civic service records, track cleanliness ratings, and reach out to municipal officials all from one place.
The pilot started at the home of writer Sadashiv Kautuk. Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav highlighted that this project brings the physical address into the digital age, making city services more accessible and structured. The QR codes are also embedded with exact geo-coordinates to help emergency services like ambulances and fire brigades reach homes faster.
Municipal Commissioner Shivam Verma confirmed that while the digital profile is publicly scannable, sensitive personal information such as names and mobile numbers will only be visible to the respective residents, ensuring privacy. He added that this digital address can also streamline online deliveries, postal services, and improve response times during emergencies.
This initiative, which is being provided free of cost in its pilot phase, is expected to eventually cover about 700,000 properties in the city. The QR codes will also be extended to landmarks and monuments, especially those along newly planned roads. Plans are also being considered to install statues and lay down new drainage lines in Sudama Nagar after the monsoon, aligning with broader goals of infrastructure development.
The system not only helps simplify utility and tax services but also aims to increase transparency in revenue management. By linking all address-related services to a single, secure digital platform, Indore is aligning with the broader vision of creating smart, efficient, and connected cities in India.
