Synopsis

The Uttar Pradesh government has acquired 600 acres in Gorakhpur's Dhuriyapar area to build the Dhuriyapar Industrial Township, also known as Greater GIDA. Spread across 17 villages, the project aims to boost manufacturing in the underdeveloped eastern region of the state. Big names like Adani-ACC, Shree Cement, and Keyaan Distillery have shown interest, with plans for cement plants and distillery units. A specialised electronics cluster is also in the works. The new Gorakhpur Link Expressway will improve logistics, making the township more attractive to investors. This initiative is part of UP's broader push to spread industrial growth and create jobs beyond its western hubs.

The Uttar Pradesh government has taken a major step toward industrialising the eastern belt of the state by acquiring 600 acres of land in Dhuriyapar area in Gorakhpur. Spread across 17 villages, the land will be used to establish a large-scale industrial township named Dhuriyapar Industrial Township, also being positioned as Greater GIDA under the Gorakhpur Industrial Development Authority.

The project aims to bring manufacturing and infrastructure development to the Purvanchal region, traditionally under-industrialised in comparison to the western part of the state. Officials said that the master plan has already received approval and that the process of land allotment for two industrial sectors is now underway. Additional parcels of land are expected to be acquired in the near future to meet rising interest from investors.

Among the companies looking to establish a presence in the new township is the Adani-ACC group, which is considering setting up a cement manufacturing plant. Shree Cement and Keyaan Distillery have also proposed plans for greenfield units, signalling early momentum. In addition to cement and distillery units, GIDA has indicated that a specialised electronics manufacturing cluster is in development as part of the township's future blueprint.

The industrial push is further strengthened by the recently inaugurated 91-km Gorakhpur Link Expressway, which connects the city directly to the Purvanchal Expressway. This improved connectivity is expected to drastically enhance the township's logistics framework and make it more viable for large-scale industries to operate efficiently.

This development builds on momentum from the 2023 Global Investors Summit, where the state government had secured investment proposals totalling INR 40 trillion. With a second edition of the summit likely to be held later this financial year, state authorities are targeting deeper industrial penetration in eastern and central UP. Companies like SLMG Beverages have already committed to investing INR 8,000 crore in phased expansions across eastern and western Uttar Pradesh.

The Greater GIDA initiative is part of a larger, structured push by the state to decentralise industrial development and create new economic zones outside traditional centres like Noida, Ghaziabad, and Lucknow. Beyond manufacturing, the government is simultaneously investing in tourism, IT, logistics, and export infrastructure, with an eye on both employment generation and regional economic transformation.
