The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) recently undertook demolition drives targeting unauthorised constructions in the Koparkhairane and Airoli regions. Despite prior notices under Section 54 of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, 1966, several individuals continued illegal construction activities without obtaining approvals. Under the directives of the Commissioner and senior civic officials, the encroachment department executed partial demolitions with the support of municipal staff and police personnel. The operations involved mechanical tools, labourers, and tight security deployment.
A robust anti-encroachment drive was carried out across the Koparkhairane and Airoli divisions of Navi Mumbai, as per instructions issued by Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde. The operations were conducted under the guidance of Additional Commissioner (2) Dr Rahul Gethe and Deputy Commissioner (Encroachment) Dr Kailas Gaikwad, with the encroachment department acting upon multiple non-compliant sites.
The civic body had earlier served notices under Section 54 of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, 1966, for unauthorised constructions. One such notice was issued to Mrs Janabai Baburao Mhatre for a structure at House No. 390, Bonkode village, Koparkhairane. Another was served to Mr Mukesh Janardan Randive for a construction at House No. 280, in Khairane village near Friends Bakery. Despite the issuance of notices, no action was taken by the recipients to remove or halt construction, leading to partial demolition of both structures.
To carry out the demolition effectively, the Koparkhairane team, led by Assistant Commissioner Mr Bharat U Dhandhe and Junior Engineer Mr Chandrakant Dhotre, mobilised a squad comprising civic staff and police personnel. The operation utilised 9 labourers, 2 electronic hammers, 1 pickup van, and 1 gas cutter.
In a parallel action within Airoli under the NMMC's G Division, unauthorised construction was found at House No. F-203, Sector-03, initiated by Mr Vasant Sathe without any formal permissions from the municipal body. A notice had already been issued under Section 54; however, Mr Sathe failed to comply by removing the structure voluntarily. Subsequently, a partial demolition was executed under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner and Divisional Officer Mr Sunil Kathole. The team comprised 10 labourers, 2 breakers, 3 hammers, and civic police staff.
Another unauthorised construction was found at Row House No. 04, G Villa, Sector-02 in Airoli. Mrs Yogita L. Acharkar was found to have initiated construction without municipal approval. Despite being served notice under the same legislation, the construction work continued unabated. This prompted the Airoli team, again under Mr Kathole's direction, to conduct a partial demolition. For this operation, 10 labourers, 2 breakers, 2 hammers, and support staff from the encroachment wing were deployed.
The civic body has indicated that this is only the beginning of a more stringent crackdown and that intensified actions against illegal encroachments will continue across Navi Mumbai in the coming weeks.
Navi Mumbai's municipal administration has clearly signalled a zero-tolerance stance against unauthorised development. These coordinated demolitions across Koparkhairane and Airoli reflect the city's renewed commitment to urban order, planned growth, and enforcement of development norms. Going forward, the municipal corporation appears poised to initiate even more assertive measures, thereby warning developers and citizens alike against bypassing regulatory processes.
