MMRDA has launched a INR 325 crore programme to upgrade rural roads across ten villages in Alibaug, following its recent appointment as the region's planning authority. The plan includes cement-concrete resurfacing on key stretches connecting villages to Alibaug's town centre. With tenders issued for detailed design and management, on-ground construction is slated to begin soon. This initiative forms part of a wider connectivity vision including multimodal corridors and ring-road projects that aims to improve access and boost land and tourism value in Alibaug and adjacent areas.
This week, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) took its first major step since being appointed the special planning authority for Alibaug by initiating a INR 325 crore rural road infrastructure project across ten villages. The authority has issued tenders for appointing a consultant who will prepare the detailed project report (DPR) and supervise on-ground execution.
The proposed plan covers resurfacing of approximately 28 kilometers of roads with cement concrete to enhance structural durability and all-season usability. The project includes several critical stretches: Burumkhana Naka-Varsoli-Vitthal Mandir-Vidyanagar, Rajmala-Thal Chalma-Thal Aagar-Thal Kala Gate-Bhal Naka, Navagaon-Kihim-Chondi Naka, Wawane Naka-Belochi, Bhonang-Talvali, and Gaychole-Phansapur. These routes are currently in poor condition and have drawn repeated complaints, especially from commuters and tourists entering Alibaug-a destination that sees substantial weekend and holiday footfall.
According to MMRDA officials, the objective is to ensure smoother last-mile connectivity and reduce transit challenges for local residents, tourists, and businesses. The agency plans to accelerate the implementation timeline once the consultant is onboard.
This road rehabilitation push is part of a broader strategy being implemented under MMRDA's jurisdiction across Raigad, Palghar, Vasai, Pen, and Khalapur regions. It complements larger connectivity projects such as the 126-kilometer Virar-Alibaug multimodal corridor and the proposed regional ring road system that aims to integrate Mumbai's core with its emerging urban fringes.
The Virar-Alibaug corridor alone is expected to cut travel time by nearly half, positioning Alibaug as a more accessible and lucrative zone for tourism and investment. Experts view the MMRDA's involvement in Alibaug as a potential trigger for real estate development, especially as improved infrastructure tends to elevate land valuation and attract hospitality and residential projects.
