Synopsis

The Maharashtra government has appointed MMRDA as the nodal agency for the Dharavi Multi-Modal Transit Hub (MMTH), aimed at transforming connectivity across Mumbai. The hub will integrate Mahim, Sion, and Chunabhatti railway stations with Metro Lines 2B, 3, 8, and 11, and connect to the BKC Bullet Train station, Mumbai airport, and the upcoming Navi Mumbai airport. It will also extend BKC's Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system to Dharavi. The project includes amenities like offices, retail, hotels, and a convention centre. MMRDA will soon begin feasibility studies, with officials describing the hub as a key step in Dharavi's inclusive urban redevelopment.

The Maharashtra state government has recently appointed the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) as the nodal agency to lead a significant infrastructure project in Dharavi, Mumbai. This initiative aims to improve connectivity and integrate various modes of transport within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) by establishing a new multi-modal transit hub.

The Dharavi Multi-Modal Transit Hub (MMTH) project is set to enhance overall urban mobility. MMRDA will coordinate with major stakeholders for this project, including the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL), Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), Central and Western Railways, and the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking.

According to a Government Resolution dated June 18, the scope of the MMTH is extensive. It includes integration with suburban railway stations at Mahim, Sion, and Chunabhatti. It will also connect with existing and upcoming metro corridors, specifically Metro Lines 2B, 3, 8, and 11.

Furthermore, the transit hub will provide connectivity to the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) Bullet Train Station, Mumbai airport, and the under-construction Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). The scheme also involves extending the BKC's Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system directly up to Dharavi.

Beyond transportation, the project will also incorporate supporting amenities such as retail stores, offices, hotels, restaurants, cafes, and a convention centre, aiming for a holistic urban transformation. A senior MMRDA official stated that the authority will soon begin the process of hiring a professional agency to conduct a feasibility study and prepare detailed project structuring reports, which will provide crucial inputs for the implementation plan.

Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA, reportedly stated that this multi-modal transit hub is not merely a transport integration project but embodies a vision for inclusive urban transformation. He added that MMRDA will propose a comprehensive implementation plan after completing the feasibility study to ensure maximum modal integration and urban impact.

Dharavi, one of Asia's largest informal settlements, is undergoing a massive redevelopment, making such a transit hub crucial for its planned transformation and for improving Mumbai's overall connectivity.
