Synopsis

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has carried out a demolition drive in the Ghansoli area against unauthorised constructions, which continued despite prior notices issued under Section 54 of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, 1966. The demolition was ordered by the civic chief and executed under the supervision of senior officials. RCC structures rising up to four storeys were razed as they lacked necessary permissions. Officials have signalled a stricter crackdown on future violations across the region.

In a significant enforcement action against unauthorised construction, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) undertook a demolition operation in the Ghansoli division earlier this week. Acting on instructions from Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde and under the supervision of Additional Commissioner (2) Dr Rahul Gethe and Deputy Commissioner (Encroachment) Dr Kailas Gaikwad, the corporation's encroachment department executed the drive.

Despite receiving notices under Section 54 of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, 1966, the individuals involved failed to comply, leading to the current action. Property owners Sheshnarayan Gupta and Oshilal Gareeb Oswal, along with developer Sonu Bholkumar Gupta, had allegedly begun constructing an RCC ground plus three-storey building in Bachchu Chawl, Dattnagar, Ghansoli Village, Navi Mumbai. The construction was initiated without securing prior approval from NMMC.

The civic body had served formal notices instructing the concerned parties to dismantle the illegal structure themselves. However, the unauthorised work reportedly continued unabated, compelling the authorities to intervene.

The demolition squad included six labourers, two breakers, one gas cutter, and a JCB machine. The operation was carried out under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner and Divisional Officer of the Ghansoli ward, Mr Uttam Kharat, along with Assistant Junior Engineer Mr Rohit Thakre. Other civic officials, staff members, and personnel from the local police station were also deployed during the drive to maintain order and support the operation.

Authorities have indicated that similar operations will be intensified in the future to address unlawful construction activities across Navi Mumbai.

With increasing pressure on city infrastructure and growing instances of illegal construction, the civic administration appears determined to enforce compliance with regulatory standards. Going forward, such decisive action may serve as a strong deterrent to violators attempting to bypass established procedures.
