Synopsis

Maharashtra CM Shri Devendra Fadnavis has announced a INR 4,000 crore road upgrade plan for Nashik ahead of the 2027 Simhastha Kumbh Mela, with central government support. Nine key routes connecting Nashik, along with the Nashik Ring Road and Nashik-Trimbak road (to be widened to six lanes), have received in-principle approval from Union Minister Shri Nitin Gadkari. A Detailed Project Report is underway. Roads such as Ghoti-Trimbakeshwar, Dwarka-Sinnar, and Nashik-Dhule will be developed to handle the massive influx of devotees. These upgrades aim to ensure safe and efficient movement during the world-renowned religious event, enhancing regional connectivity and infrastructure resilience.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis recently announced a major plan to upgrade road infrastructure leading to Nashik. This initiative, specifically for the city of Nashik, is in preparation for a large-scale religious congregation scheduled for 2027, with central government support for developing multiple connecting routes.

A total of nine roads connecting Nashik will be developed and upgraded by the central government. Preliminary estimates suggest the construction work for these routes is likely to cost INR 4,000 crore, with additional funds expected for the Nashik Ring Road project. Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Shri Gadkari extended in-principle approval for the necessary roads and facilities required for the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela, to be held in Nashik in 2027.

This approval came during a high-level meeting held in Nagpur over the weekend. The upgrades are deemed essential due to the huge crowd of devotees expected, which would otherwise strain the existing traffic system. A Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be prepared soon, and funds will be made available for this.

The Nashik Ring Road was approved in the meeting, and the Nashik to Trimbak road is also to be widened to six lanes. The routes slated for development include Ghoti - Pahine - Trimbakeshwar - Jawhar Phata; Dwarka Circle - Sinnar IC 21 (Samruddhi Expressway); Nandur Shingote - Kolhar - Nashik to Kasara; Savli Vihir (IC 20 Samruddhi Expressway); Shirdi - Shani Shingnapur Phata (Rahuri Khurd); Nashik to Dhule; Trimbakeshwar - Jawhar - Manor; Shadow Well - Manmad - Malegaon; and the route from Ghoti - Sinnar - Vavi - Shirdi - Shani Shingnapur Phata (Rahuri Khurd) - Ahilyanagar (Kharwandi Phata).

The Kumbh Mela is one of the largest religious gatherings globally, necessitating significant infrastructure and crowd management planning to ensure safety and smooth logistics for pilgrims.
