Bondada Group has secured a significant 400 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) project from Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited (TNGECL), marking a key development in Tamil Nadu's push towards grid stability and renewable energy integration. The standalone BESS facilities will be installed at Vellalaviduthi and Thennampatty, with the project set to operate under a build-own-operate model. Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited (TANGEDCO) has entered into a 12-year energy storage purchase agreement with the company, enabling two full charge-discharge cycles daily to manage peak demand and ensure uninterrupted power delivery.
Construction engineering firm Bondada Group recently announced that it had secured a 400 megawatt hour (MWh) battery energy storage system (BESS) contract from Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited (TNGECL), signifying a strategic move towards enhancing power grid stability in the state.
The project will involve setting up standalone grid-scale BESS units across two locations-Vellalaviduthi and Thennampatty-in Tamil Nadu. These installations aim to address the increasing demand for energy security, especially with the state's growing dependence on intermittent renewable energy sources.
This initiative is part of Tamil Nadu's broader ambition to bolster renewable energy infrastructure and to efficiently manage fluctuations in electricity supply during peak demand periods. Bondada Group emerged as the winning bidder following a competitive tender process floated by TNGECL. The execution model adopted is the build-own-operate (BOO) framework, ensuring long-term engagement and accountability from the developer.
As per the agreement terms, Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited (TANGEDCO) will purchase energy storage capacity from Bondada Group over a 12-year period. This contract entails the supply of storage systems capable of undergoing two full charge and discharge cycles daily, effectively allowing the state grid to store surplus power during off-peak hours and release it when demand spikes.
This is not Bondada Group's first major win in the energy segment. In recent years, the company has been expanding its footprint in infrastructure for renewable energy and telecom, with a strong focus on grid support technologies like battery storage systems, especially as India aims to meet its clean energy targets.
