The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) is set to auction properties of 73 major property tax defaulters next month, targeting those who ignored earlier confiscation notices. Each defaulter owes over INR1 lakh, and the crackdown follows warnings sent to 425 such cases. The city faces over INR250 crore in unpaid property taxes from more than 1.5 lakh defaulters. Earlier this fiscal year, NMC ran an amnesty scheme offering up to 90% penalty rebates, which over 60,000 defaulters used, resulting in INR30 crore in waived penalties. Property tax is crucial for city services, and auctions are being used as a last-resort recovery method.
The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) is preparing to take stringent action against property tax defaulters in the coming month. This measure, aimed at recovering significant unpaid dues from those who have ignored previous notices, involves auctioning off properties across Nashik city.
In the initial phase of this enforcement drive, the NMC plans to auction properties belonging to 73 property tax defaulters. These individuals had reportedly failed to clear their outstanding dues even after warrants for property confiscation were issued.
Earlier, the NMC had dispatched such confiscation warrants to a broader group of 425 property tax defaulters, granting them a 21-day period to settle their dues or face the seizure of their properties. Each of these particular defaulters had outstanding amounts exceeding INR 1 lakh. Overall, the NMC faces a challenge with more than 1.5 lakh property tax defaulters, with the total pending dues amounting to over INR 250 crore. The civic body has also previously issued both first and second notices to over 5,000 of these defaulters.
In a recent effort to encourage payment, the NMC had introduced an amnesty scheme during the October-January period of the 2024-25 fiscal year. This program offered property tax defaulters rebates of up to 90% on their penalty amounts for outstanding dues. More than 60,000 defaulters reportedly took advantage of this scheme during that period, leading to the waiver of INR 30 crore in penalties on their outstanding dues.
Property tax serves as a vital source of income for municipal corporations, funding essential public services and infrastructure development. Auctions of properties are often employed as a last resort by civic bodies to enforce tax collection and ensure their financial stability.
