GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd (GHIAL) has launched a INR 5,843 crore expansion at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport to meet rising traffic. The plan includes a new 225,000 sq. m terminal primarily for domestic use, a 3,800-meter runway for low-visibility operations, and a 650-meter cross taxiway for wide-body aircraft. Aircraft stands will increase to 163 and parking bays to 5,590. A second cargo terminal (50,000 MT capacity) costing INR 160 crore is set to open by July. The existing terminal is also being expanded at INR 427 crore. A 31-km metro line from Mindspace to the airport is planned to boost access, with GHIAL supporting the initiative. AERA will determine revised tariffs.

GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd (GHIAL) is currently initiating a major expansion project at the city's international airport. This substantial undertaking aims to significantly boost its capacity for passenger and aircraft movements through extensive infrastructure upgrades.


The expansion plan includes a new terminal building spanning over 225,000 square meters, designed mainly for domestic flights but adaptable for international operations. This new terminal, along with related landside infrastructure like roads and IT systems, carries a total cost of INR 5,843 crore. Airside improvements feature a new 3,800-meter runway, equipped for safe landings even in low visibility.

A 650-meter cross taxiway, suitable for wide-body aircraft, will connect the northern and southern airfields. While the existing terminal can handle 34 million passengers annually, and its runway supports 42 aircraft movements per hour, an aviation study forecasts this capacity will be insufficient by 2029, suggesting the need for another runway. Overall, aircraft stands will increase from 130 to 163, and parking bays from 2,600 to 5,590. The current terminal building is also being expanded for INR 427 crore.

Additionally, the airport's cargo handling capacity, currently 150,000 metric tonnes per annum, will grow with a second cargo terminal (50,000 mt capacity) costing INR 160 crore, expected to be ready by July. To improve connectivity, the Telangana government plans a 31-kilometer metro line from Mindspace to the airport, with GHIAL expected to provide support. RGIA is experiencing rapid growth, notably a significant rise in both domestic and international passenger traffic. The Airports Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) is involved in determining future aeronautical tariffs.
