Synopsis

Uttar Pradesh has operationalised the Gorakhpur Link Expressway, its seventh expressway, developed at an investment of INR 7,283 crore. This 91.35 km stretch links Gorakhpur to districts including Azamgarh and significantly strengthens the state's share in Indias expressway network, raising it from 38% to 42%. With over 1,200 km of access-controlled expressways now within its borders, UP leads nationally. The expressway was built partly on land acquired from 22,000 farmers and is projected to transform the socio-economic fabric of the Purvanchal region.

Uttar Pradesh has added another milestone to its infrastructure development by operationalising the Gorakhpur Link Expressway, a 91.35-km project connecting Gorakhpur with key districts such as Azamgarh. Developed at an investment of INR 7,283 crore, the expressway includes INR 3,400 crore allocated for construction, with the remainder used for land acquisition and associated costs. Approximately 1,100 hectares of land were acquired from 22,000 farmers to bring the project to life.

The state government stated that with the inauguration of this project, Uttar Pradesh now accounts for 42% of the country's access-controlled expressway network, a rise from its previous 38%. Officials highlighted that this marks the seventh operational expressway in the state and is part of a broader infrastructure push, with five of these seven expressways completed within the past eight years under the Yogi Adityanath administration.

Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Singh indicated that India has around 2,900 km of access-controlled expressways, out of which over 1,200 km are situated in Uttar Pradesh. He noted that the upcoming Ganga Expressway would soon be included in this list, pushing the state's share of the national expressway network to more than 62%.

Singh further observed that the Gorakhpur Link Expressway has not only bridged physical distances but is also poised to bring a significant shift in the economic and social development of the Purvanchal region.

According to the state government, Uttar Pradesh stands as the only state in the country with the highest number of completed, under-construction, and proposed expressways. The seven currently operational expressways include the Purvanchal Expressway (341 km), Bundelkhand Expressway (296 km), Agra-Lucknow Expressway (302 km), Yamuna Expressway (165 km), Delhi-Meerut Expressway (96 km), Noida-Greater Noida Expressway (25 km), and the newly inaugurated Gorakhpur Link Expressway (91 km).

Additionally, the state's longest expressway the Ganga Expressway spanning 594 km is under rapid development. Other expressways in various stages of construction include the Ballia Link Expressway (35 km), Lucknow-Kanpur Greenfield Expressway (63 km), and the Chitrakoot Link Expressway, which connects several existing routes via Farrukhabad. A link expressway between the Ganga Expressway and the Jewar Airport Link Expressway is also currently being built.

The inauguration of the Gorakhpur Link Expressway is not just a step forward in connectivity but also a strategic move to stimulate regional growth and socio-economic progress in eastern UP. With more projects in the pipeline, the state's ambitious infrastructure push continues to reshape the national logistics and transport narrative.
