Mumbai's ambitious road concreting project, launched in January 2023, has achieved 49% completion across 2,121 roads, with 36% fully finished end-to-end. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reports that the initiative is progressing on schedule and aims for total completion by May 2027. Phase 1 covered 700 roads, of which 343 (102 km) are complete, with another 239 roads partially done. In Phase 2, 428 roads (84 km) are fully ready, while 375 have been partially completed. Quality control is being overseen by IIT Bombay, ensuring robust standards through surprise checks and detailed testing. Post-monsoon, remaining works will resume, with strict no-dig policies now in place on completed roads.
Mumbai?s large-scale road concreting project, initiated in January 2023, has reached a significant milestone with 36% of the total 2,121 roads completed end-to-end. If the measurement includes stretches that have been concreted from junction to junction or across half the road width allowing vehicular movement the overall completion rate stands at 49%, according to officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The civic body confirmed that the project is progressing as scheduled and is targeted for full completion by May 2027.
The initiative has been planned in two phases. In Phase 1, 700 roads spanning 320 km were taken up. Of these, 343 roads (102 km) were completed end-to-end, while 239 roads (also 102 km) were partially completed, resulting in a total of 582 roads (203 km) completed. In Phase 2, out of 1,421 roads covering 378 km, 428 roads (84 km) have been fully completed, and another 375 roads (55 km) have been partially finished. This brings the overall tally in Phase 2 to 803 roads covering 139 km.
Officials mentioned that all PQC (Pavement Quality Concrete) works have been completed, along with the installation of thermoplastic road markings, cat-eyes, signage, junction grids, and other essential features. The remaining work will resume after the monsoon season. IIT Bombay has been appointed as the independent third-party quality control agency and is conducting various tests such as cube tests, core tests, durability assessments, field density tests, among others spanning the entire process from batching to execution. The IIT team has also undertaken surprise visits, on-site inspections, and brainstorming sessions with BMC engineers to ensure quality compliance.
To protect the integrity of the work completed, the BMC has enforced a strict ban on any road digging or excavation on already concreted stretches. All barricades and accumulated construction debris have been cleared, and traffic has been allowed to resume on these roads. Drains along these sections have also been cleaned.
