West Bengal has launched a major initiative to improve fire safety in restaurants and commercial establishments, with a focus on rooftop venues. Led by Mayor Firhad Hakim and a dedicated task force, the state is drafting a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) that will soon seek formal approval. A key decision is the ban on selling rooftop spaces for general commercial use, a step aimed at reducing fire risks. All commercial and office buildings will now require third-party fire audits, especially those flagged as vulnerable in Kolkata. Additionally, disaster management teams will receive enhanced training for fire-related emergencies, strengthening urban safety preparedness.

Key officials from West Bengal including Mayor Firhad Hakim, has launched a critical initiative to enhance fire safety regulations for restaurants and other commercial establishments across the state. This comprehensive effort aims to strengthen public safety protocols following recent concerns about fire incidents in such venues.

The task force is currently preparing a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) that will require state approval. This SOP specifically addresses safety norms for rooftop restaurants, a category that has often presented unique challenges in urban settings.

In a recent meeting, members of the task force made a significant decision- they will not permit the sale of rooftop space for general commercial purposes, tightening regulations on how these areas can be utilized. Furthermore, the task force agreed to mandate independent, third-party fire audits for all commercial and office buildings, with particular attention directed towards vulnerable structures identified across Kolkata.

In a proactive move to improve emergency preparedness, the disaster management department will also undertake specialized training for its personnel, focusing on effective rescue operations during fire incidents. This comprehensive approach reflects a broader commitment to enhancing urban safety and regulatory compliance in public and commercial spaces, especially after past incidents have underscored the urgent need for robust fire prevention and response mechanisms in densely populated areas.
