Synopsis

Agoda CEO Omri Morgenshtern has announced plans to enhance the company's flight booking services in India, driven by strong local demand and successful hyperlocal strategies. Citing Ministry of Tourism data, he noted India saw 18.9 million international arrivals in 2023-but only 9.5 million were true foreign tourists, still below pre-pandemic levels. Morgenshtern pointed to complicated visa processes, poor infrastructure, and limited flight options as key barriers to growth. He advocated for more budget-friendly flights and better connectivity. As India's travel sector heats up, Agoda is positioning itself to meet rising expectations from both domestic and international travellers.

In a recent interaction with the press, Agoda CEO Omri Morgenshtern, who leads the Singapore-based digital travel company, divulged the company's plans to enhance its flight booking offerings in India to better serve its expanding user base. He observed that hyperlocal strategies had significantly aided the platform's growth in India, allowing Agoda to tailor its services effectively for local preferences.

Referring to figures shared by the Ministry of Tourism, he pointed out that India registered 18.9 million international arrivals in 2023. However, only 9.5 million of these were genuine foreign tourists. The remainder comprised non-resident Indians or individuals of Indian origin visiting family and friends. This, according to him, indicates that foreign tourist numbers are still more than 10 percent short of the 2019 pre-pandemic figure of approximately 11 million.

Morgenshtem believes the crux of the problem lies in complex visa procedures, inadequate tourism infrastructure and bureaucratic bottlenecks. He also recommended improving air travel options by way of more budget friendly options and increased flight frequencies to popular destinations.

With growing competition among travel platforms and increasing demand from both domestic and foreign tourists, Agoda appears keen to strengthen its presence further in India's rapidly evolving travel sector.
